6 Interesting Digital Marketing Statistics

A real mix of digital marketing statistics for you, each addressing some of marketers' top concerns.

1.- More than half of millennials have a separate email account to receive promotions

A study of the email habits of 1,000 Yes LifeCycle Marketing consumers has found that more than one in three (36%) have opened separate email accounts just to receive emails from the company.

The number of millennials is enormous: 58%.

2.- Half of salespeople call their IT department at least once a week

49% of marketers contact their organization's IT department at least once a week to carry out their marketing function effectively. This statistic highlights how the pace of change in the technology market is defining much of the work of marketers.

The statistic comes from Episerver's 2017 State of Digital Commerce report, based on a survey of 100 sellers.

Other findings from this report:

  • 28% of sellers still cannot edit their company website.
  • 15% work daily with their IT department on marketing tasks.
  • 56% of marketers say departments outside of marketing are holding back their ability to drive business, but 44% view working with IT as a positive.

3.- 4 out of 10 marketers are creating video in square or vertical format for social networks

The “State of Video in Social Media” report provides insight from 500 marketers and 1,000 consumers.

The power of Facebook was a major theme, with 67% of marketers saying they had paid to boost or advertise videos on Facebook in the last year. Marketers also said that Facebook videos drive more views, engagement and purchases than videos on any other social network. YouTube comes in second place, as you can see in the infographic below.

Only 25% of video advertising marketers use Instagram and Twitter, although more than half say they will change this in the next year.

Here are some of the report's other findings:

  • 84% of consumers say they watch video-type social content on mobile devices.
  • 81% of marketers say they optimize their social videos for mobile, including things like planning for silent viewing.
  • 39% of marketers create videos in square and/or vertical formats.

4.- 31% of American consumers have experienced package theft in the last year

A 2015 report estimated that 23 million Americans had packages stolen from their doors. And now a Shorr Packaging survey of 1,000 Americans found that 31% of respondents had personally experienced package theft in the past year.

  • 61% of respondents said they believe online retailers are not doing enough to prevent package theft.
  • And it appears retailers are to blame, as 58% of respondents believe shipping companies are doing their job to prevent package theft.
  • 41% of respondents reported avoiding purchasing certain items online to prevent package theft.
  • 53% of respondents actively change their plans to ensure they are home to pick up packages, despite not having to sign for them.

It appears that home delivery (92%) is still preferred over work (5%), so Americans may see their colleagues as a bigger risk than their neighbor.

5.- The home appliance market in the United Kingdom: the search share shows that it is a competitive market

A very detailed study from Pi Datametrics shows how competitive the home goods retail sector is in search in the UK.

The top 3 players own only 19% of the organic search market (Argos, Ikea, Wayfair). Retailers outside the top 20 (more than 50,000) own almost half (46%) of the organic search market.

The chart below shows this competition for organic share, split between popular categories like furniture and bedrooms.

The same Pi Datametrics report offers some cost-per-click data (Pi Datametrics' suggested bids for various terms). Here are the classified categories:

  • Bathroom: £1.14
  • Blinds and curtains: £1.08
  • Furniture: £0,96
  • Kitchen appliances: £0,75
  • Room: £0.73
  • Home and storage: £0.54
  • Decoration and rugs: £0.52
  • Cook and dinner: £0.43

6.- 62% of brand marketers do not have a mobile marketing strategy

62% of brand marketers surveyed do not have a mobile marketing strategy implemented in accordance with the ARM EMR Mobile Marketing Survey conducted by more than 500 technology provider salespeople and customers.

The number of sellers who feel prepared for the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) reduces

215 respondents were surveyed by the DMA about their readiness for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Those reporting “good” knowledge rather than “basic” knowledge have gone from 66% in February 2017 to 59% in May. Those who feel “extremely” or “somewhat” prepared decreased from 71% to 61% of the total in the same period.

More marketers also feel they will be “very” or “extremely” affected by the GDPR increase from 44% to 54%.

55% say they are on or ahead of plan to be GDPR ready, however 24% have yet to initiate a GDPR plan.

Marketers' top five concerns are consent (68%), legacy data (48%), implementing a compliant system (38%), profiling (30%), and legitimate interest (23%).
